Central Vacuum Systems

Vacu-Maid central vacuum systems are made up of a network of high quality built in 50.8mm PVC piping running from strategically located inlets throughout the building through to the remotely located vacuum pump and filtration system. By inserting a lightweight hose into an inlet and switching the system on, one is able quietly, healthily, efficiently and safely clean that portion of the building covered by the inlet. Simply removing the hose and inserting it into another inlet allows one to clean another area.

Through the correct planning and installation of the inlets, the cleaner is able to cover 100% of the house (and patio, garage, workshop, etc as required) so as to reach every surface and negate the need to own or operate a portable vacuum cleaner. The wide range of available cleaning tools and attachments allows for "Whole House Cleaning" - bare floors, carpeted floors, walls, doors, furnishings and fittings, cars, ceilings, workshops, etc.

The vacuum pump is typically mounted onto a wall in a garage, store room or suitable cupboard or other enclosure. With a footprint of under 0.2 sq. meters, the vacuum pump will not materially limit usable area nor require additional floor area to facilitate its inclusion in the building. Only a single 15A power point, installed by the electrician adjacent to the vacuum pump, is required for the majority of vacuum systems.

100 % of the vacuumed air and debris passes through the network of built in piping to the vacuum pump. The filtration system removes up to 97% of the debris and vents the balance externally via the exhaust. The result is that all the vacuumed air and debris leaves the room and no dust, allergens and organic matter is re-circulated back into in the house.

The house thus stays quieter, healthier and cleaner, and cleaning time and cleaning costs reduce.

Being a built in system, it raises selling prices and may be an important selling feature for a new development.

Why Vacu-Maid - System Design And Layout

Vacu-Maid prides itself of its strategic planning and positioning of inlets, pipe routing and remotely placed power unit. In doing this, it ensures that the designated areas to be covered when cleaning are fully 100%. Considerations include:
  • Door openings and door handing - to ensure doors need not be closed to access inlets.

  • Doors do not hinder or limit the length of usable hose from the inlet.

  • Furniture is accommodated in the design and inlets are not placed behind beds or likely positions for couches, display units and robes, etc.

  • Inlets are typically positioned at heights to match that of power outlets.

  • Full height wall piping is built into 230mm or thicker walls to limit any effect on structural integrity.

  • Vertical piping is routed so as to prevent debris build-up on sequential inlets.

  • The power unit is specifically positioned to limit the length of the exhaust line and to allow for the filtered air to be exhausted externally or ducted in the case of filter bag systems for apartments.

  • Care is taken to ensure that inlets in the garage are placed close to the garage doors so as to allow a standard hose to reach the cars whilst parked outside with the doors open. An inlet at the rear of the garage would not allow sufficient hose length to reach the cars whilst parked outside and cars parked inside a garage cannot be adequately cleaned if the car doors cannot be opened fully.

Why Vacu-Maid - Bagless Cyclonic Filtration
Why Vacu-Maid - Hepa Bag Filtration

Lindsay Manufacturing (USA), manufacturers of Vacu-Maid, offers over five types of filtration systems for their central vacuum systems. Two premium systems were specifically chosen for the South African domestic housing market:
  • Pure cyclonic filtration - small to extra large homes (up to 1900 sq. meters)

  • Hepa paper bag filtration - apartment / condominiums / smaller homes (up to 400 sq. meters)

  • Inverted bag filtration - small to large homes (Inverted bag filtration systems were specifically not chosen for this market)
Both the Vacu-Maid Pure Cyclonic systems and the HEPA paper bag systems offer similar features in terms of inlets, cleaning tools and accessories, premium pipe-work and general performance.

The criteria when choosing either of the above two systems are affordability, ability to vent the exhaust air and house size. The Pure Cyclonic systems require a suitable external vent away from window areas or contained courtyards. The HEPA bag system is more flexible and, under the correct conditions, may even be vented into ceiling voids. Both systems rely on the principal that, unlike portable vacuum cleaners, dust is not re-circulated back into the house being cleaned.

The primary difference between the two systems lies in the filtration. The pure cyclonic bagless filtration system represents the latest technology to give sustained cleaning power over time. With no bags to block, fill or clog-up with dust and debris, the system efficiency remains optimal throughout the cleaning cycles.

The HEPA paper bag system uses the same filter bags found in the highest quality European portable vacuum cleaners. However, the bag is significantly bigger (20 litres) than that found in portables (typically less than 2 litres), and operating vacuum pressures are up to 7 times higher than portables. Bags thus need only be cleaned/replaced several times each year with efficiency substantially less affected as the bag fills.
